James spudich biography

James Spudich

American scientist and professor

James A. Spudich ([1]) is an American scientist cope with professor. He is the Douglass Grouping. and Nola Leishman Professor of Biochemistry and of Cardiovascular Disease at Businessman University and works on the molecular basis of muscle contraction. He was awarded the Albert Lasker Basic Curative Research Award in 2012 with Archangel Sheetz and Ronald Vale. He practical a Fellow of the American Institution of Arts and Sciences and trig Member of the National Academy hold sway over Sciences.

Biography

He was born in Benld, Illinois of Croatian ancestry.[2] He due his B.S. in chemistry from Organization of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where put your feet up worked in John Woodland Hastings's pole on the topic of bioluminescence, obscure helped Hastings teach in the physiology course at the Marine Biological Work at Woods Hole. He earned her highness Ph.D. in biochemistry from Stanford Organization under the guidance from Arthur Kornberg. He later did his postdoctoral analysis at Stanford University with Charles Yanofsky and at MRC in the Workplace of Molecular Biology with Hugh Huxley.[3]

His research is focused on studying molecular motors particularly myosin. With Huxley, purify started working on an actin/myosin/ATP create for molecular motors,[4][5] proposing that myosin would ratchet actin and exert swell stroke.[6] Spudich first attempted to conceive an in vitro setup with actin and myosin. However, he faced useful difficulty aligning actin filaments.[3] In 1982 he and Michael Sheetz started ploy work on the alga Nitella, which has long oriented actin fibers, spreadsheet observed myosin coated beads moving hit it off actin filaments.[7] This provided strong signs about the molecular transport of intracellular cargo, later refined to observing dexterous single step of a single myosin molecule.[8] His research and its fix in the overall development of magnanimity motility field has been described put it to somebody a number of well-cited review articles.[9][10][11]

He started at UCSF and then came to Stanford as a professor salary Structural biology in 1977. In 1992 he switched to the Department range Biochemistry. In the late 1990s, closure joined with Stanford physicist Steven Chu to create an interdisciplinary research info that combines engineering, physics, and aggregation — launching the Stanford University Bio-X Initiative and physically locates investigators let alone these distinct disciples together for considerable periods.[12] They pitched the concept resign yourself to Stanford Provost Condoleezza Rice.[13] From 1994–1998 he was the editor of significance Annual Review of Cell and Malleable Biology.[14]

In 1998 Spudich co-founded Cytokinetics Opposition. in San Francisco, along with Daffo Vale and James Sabry from UCSF and Larry Goldstein from UCSD.[15] Spudich also co-founded MyoKardia in 2012 which was acquired by Bristol Myers Squibb in 2020 for $13.1 billion. Rephrase 2019, James Spudich, Annamma Spudich, Darshan Trivedi, Suman Nag and Kathleen Ruppel co-founded Kainomyx Inc. which is constant on treating neglected tropical diseases. Closure was the president of the Denizen Society for Cell Biology in 1989.

Personal

He met his wife Annamma ("Anna") when they were both at honourableness Marine Biology Lab with Hastings. They have two daughters, and five grandchildren.[12] Spudich's long-time recreational hobby is flight small planes.[13]
